THE MOMENT
While official negotiations continued at SB64 in Bonn, much of the most important work took place outside the negotiating rooms. The Subsidiary Bodies sessions are the technical engine of the global climate process, the space between COPs where negotiating text takes shape, and the positions that are refined for COP31. They are also where relationships are built.
From June 12–14, the Global Afro-Descendant Climate Justice Collaborative, The Chisholm Legacy Project, and Generation Green convened a three-day Transatlantic Strategy Convening at the Heinrich Böll Foundation, bringing together participants from more than 15 countries to strengthen relationships, align priorities, and build momentum toward COP31 in Antalya. The convening created space for Afro-descendant climate justice leaders to elevate their priorities and carry the relationships and outcomes from Belém forward into the next phase of the process.
These are the moments that rarely make headlines, yet they are where strategies are refined, and the foundations for future collaboration are built. At global forums, influence is not shaped solely in formal sessions. It is built through the conversations, coordination, and convenings that connect people across regions and around shared goals.
THE CHALLENGE
A full forum presence is not a single event. It is a sequence of moments that have to hold together: an off-site convening, delegation logistics, press moments, and an official session inside the UNFCCC, each with its own timeline, venue, and audience, all unfolding across the same compressed window in Bonn.
The delegation carried a high-stakes objective into that window. Afro-descendant peoples remain outside the formal architecture of the UNFCCC. The framework recognizes nine formal stakeholder constituencies, including a dedicated Indigenous Peoples constituency with its own platform and participation rights, but there is no equivalent for Afro-descendant peoples, despite COP30 in Belém marking the first time they were named in core negotiation texts. Advancing that recognition required more than showing up. It required a delegation that arrived coordinated, aligned, and positioned to be taken seriously by the people who shape the process. Our clients needed every operational piece to run without friction so the delegation could stay focused on that message, those relationships, and that strategy.
THE WORK
At SB64, Terra40® delivered strategic coordination across the full arc of the delegation’s presence:
› An off-site convening. Production and coordination for the three-day Transatlantic Strategy Convening (June 12–14) at the Heinrich Böll Foundation, formally hosted by the Global Afro-Descendant Climate Justice Collaborative, The Chisholm Legacy Project, and Generation Green, bringing participants together in person and online to align priorities on the road to COP31.
› Delegation support. End-to-end coordination for delegation members participating across the convening, the side event, and the wider SB64 program.
› Two press conferences. Planning and on-the-ground management of two press moments, positioning the delegation’s priorities in front of the media presence at Bonn.
› An official UNFCCC side event. Full production of Repairing Climate Harm Through Community Empowerment and Justice, a participatory side event co-hosted by La Ruta del Clima, the Center for Economic and Social Rights, and The Chisholm Legacy Project, demanding that the voices of the communities most impacted by climate change define the agenda on the road to Antalya.

THE OUTCOME
The room worked, and it produced the moment that mattered most. During the off-site convening, the Brazilian COP30 Presidency participated in person and engaged directly with the delegation. Rather than chasing an audience in the corridors of the negotiation venue, the delegation hosted a sitting COP Presidency inside its own convening, and used that access to open a direct conversation about the process for Afro-descendant peoples to become a formally recognized constituency within the UNFCCC.
That is the difference a well-built presence makes. A coordinated, credible delegation turned a three-day gathering into a working channel with the office positioned to help carry Afro-descendant recognition forward, and the coalition built in Bonn is still coordinating on the road to COP31.
A THROUGHLINE OF PROVEN COORDINATION
The coalition that gathered in Bonn did not start there. Earlier in 2026, Terra40® brought 57 organizations across four regions into a single Afro-descendant delegation that Colombia’s Ministry of Environment engaged with directly. From Santa Marta to Bonn, the pattern holds: relationships strengthened at one forum become the foundation for the next.
